Sailing

Sailing on Trilogy III

We are not a yacht charter business and we are not regulated by the MCA for commercial sailing. Trilogy III is not at this time Coded by the MCA because the surveyors require alterations to the engine fit that were not anticipated when it was fitted and cannot be undertaken without expensive alteration to the engine ventilation. The surveyors also seem unaware that a multihull sails in a way that is flat and rarely heels much  and their requirements of a gimballed stove and bunk cloths, a strap to hold the cook in the galley and a door arrangement to the cockpit that prevents water entering the cabin when it is open seems to ignore the fact that in conditions that would fill the cockpit with water the door is closed and that that we have never had much more than spray  in the cockpit even sailing in 3 metre seas and gale force winds. Further more this boat is unsinkable due to its foam sandwich construction and the 14 water tight compartments in her design. For all these reasons the coding process has been postponed. Therefore while we are happy to take guests sailing we are not a commercial charter vessel and guests sail at their own risk and only contribute to expenses of the trip covering their food, fuel and similar expenses.

Experience

Skipper Martin

Started sailing on the River Blackwater on a family friend's Westerly 22  in the 1960's when he was a child. In 1973 started sailing regularly on Thames sailing barges and became involved in restoring sailing barges aged 16. Passionate interest in all kinds of sailing and took all opportunities to sail in craft from Mirror dinghies to square riggers. Was a mate on Thames barges from 1980 to 2005 as often as his business career allowed. In 2003 he bought the sailing barge Wyvenhoe and operated her as  a commercial charter business for over 10 years. She was sold in 2018 to fund Trilogy III's rebuild. He became an MCA approved Sailing Barge Master in 2005 and has successfully skippered many sailing barges with commercial passengers on board sailing on the Thames estuary and various ports and rivers on the Suffolk, Essex and Kent coasts between Lowestoft and Ramsgate. Aged 68 he is still working but sails when he has time.
