Derek was an experimenter with Proas with Sidewinder in the 1970 Round Britain Race. She was later morphed into Marram and later the main hull became a trimaran K6. Still sailing in 2025. In 2012 launched a 16 metre proa and in 2017 he was a consultant to a project to build a KSS replica of an 18th century design based on drawings from Anson's voyage.
